Who we are

Co-founder and Creative Director Lulu Lytle grew up in the English countryside in an atmospheric house filled with animals and antiques.  As a child she was fascinated by the exotic, and a trip to Egypt when she was seventeen opened her eyes to the richness of oriental culture.  Studies in Egyptology and Ancient History at University College London followed, instilling a life long love of Middle Eastern art and design.

While working with antiques, Lulu recognised a demand for contemporary furniture that could match the fine workmanship and longevity of antique pieces.  She embarked on a tour of the British Isles, seeking out craftsman with exceptional skills.  She met blacksmiths, saddlers, silversmiths, cabinetmakers, rattan weavers, gilders…all manner of artisans who could realise her designs with meticulous attention to detail using the best quality materials.  Today she is a passionate advocate of British crafts and manufacturing and is, together with our makers, immensely proud of the exquisite workmanship exacted in Soane’s workshops.

Co-founder Christopher Hodsoll is well known for his idiosyncratic taste in antique furniture - a sort of English country house grandeur seen through a quirky 18th century connoisseur’s eye.  Christopher Hodsoll worked as an antique dealer in London for many years with the great Geoffrey Bennison. He has continued Bennison’s tradition of boldly luxurious, but slightly faded, aristocratic taste but has added his own enthusiasms, such as his love of architectural antique furniture.  Like his late mentor, Hodsoll himself is increasingly turning his hand from simply being an antique dealer to decorating.
