The Gambado Dining Table
This exquisite circular dining table requires the skills of six workshops. The veneered timber top, made in Suffolk, England, takes the form of a sunburst pattern, radiating out from a central burr (characterful growth within a tree’s trunk - a natural result of fungus), giving each table its own beautiful individuality. The tabletop is edged with a cross banded veneer, with the edge running vertically, unlike typical Art Deco sunburst designs. Scaled up from its original inspiration, its hand-stitched, leather-wrapped steel base and decorative brass finials are loosely based on a luggage rack in Soane’s collection, dating from the 1950s. Named as an ode to the ‘saddler’ stitch used on leather stirrups, the fine leatherwork on the ‘Gambado Dining Table’ requires the experienced hands of a Leicestershire-based master saddler and is available in a choice of Soane leather.
