The Apothecary Table Lamp – Verbascum
The Apothecary Table Lamp is hand painted by artist Sophie Coryndon in her Sussex studio. The design is inspired by Moorish earthenware jars known as Albarelli. These jars were used to hold ointments, medicines and even gunpowder and became popular in Italian apothecaries in the 15th century. To differentiate their contents the jars were painted with individual designs which Sophie references in the artwork of each lamp.
Each of the 6 designs is limited to an edition of 30 with names which allude to their original medicinal contents. Dynamic leaves and flowers in two shades of green plunge over the surface of this lamp, named for the medicinal plant Verbascum thapsus or mullein. Verbascum was described by the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, and its healing powers have been tried on everything from colds to sunburn. Spirited and fresh, this is the most energetic of the Albarello patterns.
This limited edition turned tulipwood table lamp comes with an 11” cream card shade included.

A turned table lamp made from tulipwood with a hand painted finish. Comes with cream card shade. Your lamp will share the same natural characteristics as any hand turned and painted wooden piece of furniture or art, including, over time, hairline cracks to the painted surface. To preserve the original finish please handle with care and avoid placing it in direct sunlight or exposing it to fluctuations in temperature or humidity. Do not use anything other than a soft cloth to keep clean.
