The Making of the Custom Warp – Jajim Stripe

Soane’s Jajim Stripe weave was created to achieve long stripes running the length of the warp, rather than a horizontal stripe. A true vertical stripe demands great precision and specialist skill, often requiring up to six hours of careful handling to prepare and custom knot the loom (if it goes smoothly!), as a single misplaced thread would render the fabric unusable.

Knotting Jajim Stripe is technically challenging for our weavers, based in the English county of Suffolk, as the cotton yarn is notably thicker than a typical cotton warp, meaning the knotting machine must operate at half speed to maintain accuracy. The custom warp of this demanding design is managed proudly by Jim, a skilled knotter with over two decades of experience and even greater patience.
