Rattan – Rich
Rattan really is an extraordinary material, stronger and more durable than most other plants used for weaving. From the tropical regions of south-east Asia, rattan is a naturally renewable climbing palm, which grows in primary rainforest and is reliant on the existence of healthy vegetation to flourish. Soane's craftspeople work skilfully with the flexible plant material in the only rattan workshop in Britain, continuing a centuries' old tradition of rattan weaving in Leicester. Soane is proud to have initiated our own thriving apprenticeship scheme to foster skills passed down over generations.
As Soane's rattan stains emphasise the natural characteristics of the grain, our craftsmen deftly select every length of rattan for each individual order to ensure optimum results. A single layer of stain is applied and followed by two fine layers of clear laquer.
